George Servanis is a Melbourne-based drummer, vocalist and songwriter. In a career spanning more than two decades George has worked with Australian music industry royalty; both as a writer, session artist, and live percussionist - with a stint on Live National Aussie TV thrown in for good measure.
In 2014, George bit the bullet and produced his debut self-titled EP. Continuing in the direction of composition, in 2017 George co-wrote the theme song "Back to my Home" for ABC TV's 'Back Roads' and in 2018 worked collaboratively on a feature film score.
George Servanis was the drummer for acclaimed songstress Mama Kin (aka Danielle Caruana) who he joined in 2009 at the launch of her career. He worked solidly on her debut album 'Beat and Holler' along with keyboardist Michael Caruana. George and Danielle were awarded the 2013 Australian Independent Music Award for 'Blues Roots' for the co-written "Give me a Reason" featured on Mama Kin's follow up ARIA nominated album "The Magician's Daughter".
George has toured locally and internationally, supporting the likes of John Butler Trio, The Cat Empire, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, and The Waifs.
George Servanis is a drummer in Nicky Bomba's funk reggae outfit Bomba and more recently ARIA nominated mento-inspired outfit Bustamento. He is also a regular drummer with the ARIA award winning Melbourne Ska Orchestra (ABC FOUR|FOUR).
Beginnings...
A self taught drummer, George Servanis cut his teeth on the thriving Melbourne live music scene in the mid eighties playing in bands like Largest Living Things, cult reggae-funk band Bomba, Triple J Unearthed band Stovetop, and many others.
It was an exciting time to be a young musician -
"It was inspiring to see so many live performances from musicians and bands who had a massive influence on me both early on and throughout my career".
Early on George's strong sense of curiosity led him to seek mentors in a variety of rhythms and beats - he sits confidently behind the drum kit in a wide diversity of styles. His quiet style of achievement is typical of a musician whose focus is set squarely on the music - his list of achievements would probably come as a surprise to even those who know him.
By the late nineties George had been hand picked by the late great Paul Hester of Crowded House fame to sit behind the drum kit in Largest Living Things. When Hester and the band were approached by ABC TV to do a music quiz show, Hessie's Shed was born. As the show's drummer, George played with the creme of Australian music including Paul Kelly, Neil Finn, Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil), Ruby Hunter, Kutcha Edwards, Colin Hay (Men at Work) and many more. Co-hosted by Brian Nankervis (Rockwiz), Hessie's Shed was broadcast in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and on MTV in Europe - it ran over 1998 and 1999.
